Fairlane

One of the more popular collector cars in Australia is the 1959 Ford Fairlane, or "Tank Fairlane" as some people unkindly call it. They were sold here as 1959, 1960 and 1961 models with minor cosmetic changes. Remember they are all 1959 Fords when ordering parts. Most were fitted with an all new 332 cubic inch "FE" series engine, although some ambulances and police cars had the far better 352 cubic inch engine. I remember these cars when they were brand new, they had won an award at the Brussels World Fair as being "The World's Most Elegant Car". A 1959 Fairlane was also Ford's 50 Millionth car produced. A bit of trivia, "Fairlane" is the name of Henry Ford's mansion in Dearborn, Michigan so no prizes for guessing where the name came from.

In 1962 Ford Australia released the "Compact Fairlane", bringing us up current with the release of the USA models. The 1962 model was fitted with an all new small block V8 of 221 cubic inches, which was the same size as the original Ford V8 from 1932. In 1963 the engine size was increased to 260 cubic inches, and finally to the popular 289 V8. 1964 was the last year here for the USA Fairlane as Ford introduced the Galaxie as Ford Australia's flagship which was probably a good thing, as the American 1965 Fairlane was not a very good looking car at all.
